Copenhagen-based DJ and producer Ingrate is ready with his debut EP ‘With A System In Mind’ out 14th of February via Copenhagen label Anyines. Having previously roamed the club scene as Kid Antoine, this EP kicks off the moniker Ingrate, presenting a more mysterious and playful world of sonics; radcool speaker stack music, designed “with a system in mind”. The four tracks of the EP continue in the path of the only Ingrate release so far - 2018’s “Crypto Poser/The Enigma" out via Oli XL’s W-I (now Bloom) label. But it’s as if Ingrate is bringing an even quirkier funk to the club this time. Like a 2020 version of Mr. Oizo, if only a little sexier. The connection to friend and collaborator Oli XL is clear in the sonics of the EP. Both of them masters of teasing the club - making you smile on the dancefloor. Touching on the the banalities and clichés of club music while still seeking new sound territories, the record is a slight tongue-in-cheek, but optimistic take on the dance music scene of the coming decade. Play it in the club, if you dare. ‘Imp’ takes point with it’s babbling percussion, hammering it’s beliefs firmly in steel against a backdrop of falling, redemptive pads. The jealous, hollow sounding cymbal voices of ‘Deceived’ counterpoint their own thoughts of despair. ‘Hoax’ is a sleight of hand spectacle; a svengali trick deck is conjured up and away again, as at the hand of a deception artist in the middle of a thick smoke screen. In the midst of it all, the listener’s only trustworthy companion becomes a mischievous “catch me if you can" synth; teasing, but still leading them, on their way through this world of mirages. The EP’s grand finale is ‘Yourself’ - a funhouse of the mind, full of blinding strobes, distorting mirrors and winking figures. The world is strange, buckle up for the ride.
